Advocating Professional
Integrity and Transparency
At the Society of Modern Applied Psychology, we place immense value on professional integrity, recognizing it as a cornerstone of our work, people and principles.
⨁ Future-Proofing the field
two fully opposing perspectives
on the typical human experience
Scholars, psychologists, and psychiatrists often debate two opposing views of human nature. One perspective views individuals as “broken” or flawed, expressing the need for intervention. This idea is core to traditional psychiatry, which treats mental health conditions as disorders requiring expert help.
The opposing perspective emphasizes that all people can grow by understanding and accepting their circumstances. Here, labels are seen as reductive, and dismiss the uniqueness of each person’s lived experience. Both perspectives shape how we approach the path toward mental health and personal growth.

⨁ SoMAP: Our Mission
Understanding people for who they
are and what they've experienced
Understanding arises from seeing people as they are—beyond the confines of a clinical lens. This perspective fosters empathy, connection, and respect. Sadly, the diagnostic industry prioritises profit over people, reducing individuals to labels and categories. In our view, this represents the highest form of professional dishonesty.
Many organizations profit from selling diagnoses and treatments, often prioritizing revenue over the human capacity for growth. This approach perpetuates a harmful cycle, reducing individuals to problems to be solved rather than people with experiences to be understood. SoMAP advocates for a more life-affirming model, striving to shift an entire industry beyond the confines of rigid diagnostic frameworks toward a more empathetic, integral and holistic perspective.
⨁ accreditation fit to improve lives
An Industry-Wide Integrity Crisis
A conflict of interests arises by default within the diagnostic industry due to the intertwining of financial incentives and the well-being of individuals. Psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, and even politicians benefit directly from maintaining a system that prioritizes diagnostics as a means to justify ongoing services, products, and funding.
When individuals unversed in psychological wisdom face challenging life experiences, they often seek help to process their situations. However, the nature of the industry disincentivizes facilitating true resolution. Instead, there is a tendency to frame natural responses to hardship as clinical conditions, prompting prolonged treatment plans or therapy.
These practices, while appearing helpful, are often driven to support the revenue streams of service providers, secure future session fees, and justify government grants for professionals’ salaries. This cyclical arrangement fosters dependency on the system rather than enabling people to process their experiences, set healthy future goals and grow autonomously.

⨁ SoMAP: Our Mission
So, what must the solution be?
The road to progress lies in shifting the future of psychological practice towards a more empowering, people-centred approach. We will champion applied psychologists who are equipped to lead individuals through life’s challenges, help them manage their emotions, and engage constructively within society.
This requires a full reorientation of the industry’s priorities, emphasizing education, prevention, and coaching over treatment or labeling. SoMAP is committed to this vision and will only accredit members who demonstrate accountability by serving their communities and promoting personal responsibility in those they support.
Our verified practitioners must be proven in their ability to help people navigate life’s challenges by building self-awareness, understanding their situations, and applying practical wisdom. Their approach focuses on emotional resilience, avoiding the labeling of natural responses as problems. SoMAP is dedicated to promoting individual well-being and autonomy, ensuring that psychological insights are applied ethically and free from financial or institutional bias.
