What is psychology?
As with all things, its possible for different people to define and understand words in completely contradictory ways. Lets us clarify our understanding of psychology’s purpose.
⨁ The roots of psychology
the study of what makes us human
Psychology is the exploration of what makes us human—the thoughts we think, the emotions we feel, and the behaviors we display. It is the study of the mind, cognitive processes, emotionals, and behavioral interactions, bridging the gap between our internal world and the way we interact with the world around us.
The roots of psychology trace back to ancient times, where philosophers pondered questions about the soul, consciousness, and human nature. However, it wasn’t until the late 19th century that psychology emerged as a formal discipline, with pioneers like Wilhelm Wundt and William James applying structured processes to study the mind. Understanding psychology is far more than an academic exercise; it’s a life-enriching pursuit crucial to how we function in the everyday.

⨁ It helps us make sense of the world
the science of knowing yourself
Have you ever wondered why you respond a certain way to challenges, why some memories linger while others fade, or why communication is easy with some but challenging with others? Psychology seeks to uncover the truth behind these mysteries, using research methods to dissect how we navigate life.
To understand psychology is to understand yourself and others. It helps us make sense of the world and offers tools to overcome challenges, build resilience, and connect more deeply with those around us. Ultimately, pursuing an understanding of psychology isn’t just about answering life’s big questions—it’s about using those answers to create a better, more compassionate version of the world we live in.
⨁ psychology offers insights into who we are
the way to a richer human experience
Psychology is often seen as a tool for treating mental illness or an academic discipline. However, this narrow view overlooks its ability to help us understand ourselves, enrich our lives, and nurture meaningful relationships. Psychology offers a key to unlocking the potential to thrive as human beings.
At its heart, psychology offers insights into who we are, why we think the way we do, and how we interact with the world. It holds the keys to setting a life course that aligns with our values, understanding ourselves with clarity, and navigating life’s challenges with resilience. Grasping psychological wisdom can help us break free from unhelpful patterns, and build habits that support long-term well-being.
Far from being solely about mental unwellness—a trend more closely associated with psychiatry—psychology offers insights for living a fulfilled and connected life. It can teach us how to cultivate self-awareness, nurture deeper connections with others, and approach life’s complexities with wisdom. Whether it’s learning to resolve conflict in relationships, find purpose in our careers, or understanding the motivations behind our choices, psychology is a toolkit for self-mastery.
By shifting the focus away from diagnosis and toward personal growth, we can see psychology for what it is: a roadmap to a richer, more intentional, and connected human experience. It’s not just about understanding the mind—it’s about unlocking the potential within each of us to lead lives of authenticity, balance, and meaning.

Self-Knowledge
Exploring human psychology is key to growing in self-knowledge. It helps you uncover patterns in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, offering clarity about why you act the way you do. With this awareness, you can make far wiser choices, improve emotional resilience, and foster healthier relationships, ultimately leading to personal growth and deeper self-awareness.
Self-Awareness
Delving into human psychology enhances self-awareness by helping you recognize your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Understanding why you act or feel a certain way improves decision-making, and strengthens relationships. By exploring psychological concepts, you gain deeper insights into yourself, enabling positive change and greater emotional resilience in daily life.
Self-Confidence
Studying psychology helps build self-confidence by providing insights into thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Understanding why we think or feel a certain way empowers us to challenge self-doubt and develop a positive mindset. By learning coping mechanisms and improving interpersonal skills, we can navigate challenges more effectively and boost our confidence in any situation.
Social Awareness
Understanding human psychology enhances social awareness by helping us empathize with others’ emotions, needs, and behaviors. It allows us to navigate relationships more effectively, resolve conflicts, and communicate with greater sensitivity. By learning how people think and feel, we can build stronger connections and foster a more inclusive, understanding environment.
Personal Efficiency
Unlocking insights into behavior, motivation, and decision-making, allowing you to work smarter and more effectively. By recognizing patterns like procrastination or stress triggers, you can develop strategies to stay focused and productive. Cultivating self-awareness and empathy aids communication, helping you collaborate better and achieve goals with greater efficiency.
Social Effectiveness
By studying human psychology, you can deepen your understanding of how people think, feel, and behave. ⨁ let us clarify our perspective
We're Ensuring that the field of psychology does what its meant to
Psychology was first established to explore the intricacies of the human mind and to understand the factors influencing human behavior. In more recent years, however, various organizations and psychological societies have shifted focus, dedicating substantial resources to areas such as medical research, physical illnesses like COVID-19, brain disorders, and even sociological trends.
Any society that fails to recognize the distinction between the human brain, a tangible organ, and the human mind, the intangible source of thoughts and emotions, is unqualified to align itself with the field of psychology. Understanding this difference is essential to the study of human behavior and mental processes, and ignoring it undermines the very foundation of psychological practice.
Furthermore, trends like cuddle, breathing and art therapy blur the lines of focus within psychology, leading to public misconceptions about the core mission of SoMAP. Unlike other society groups, SoMAP maintains its dedication to sensible, pragmatic applications of psychology, emphasizing the betterment of individual well-being through actionable psychological wisdom.
Our intention is not to discredit other groups within the field of psychological practice but to clarify where we stand on this matter. Psychology, at its very core, should enlighten its learners in matters of the mind, and foster self-awareness within individuals. It is neither medicinal nor sociological; rather, it is purely ideological. By its very nature, psychology cannot ever be an empirical science.

⨁ raising INDUSTRY-WIDE standards
Accreditation that doesn't equate to competency development is valueless.
The true power of psychology lies not in its fascinating theories, but in its ability to modify people’s outlooks upon life. Knowledge without application holds little value. That’s why we focus on transforming psychological insights into actionable steps that leave a lasting impact on people’s lives.
Every month, new members join the Achology Applied Psychology Academy and embark on their journey toward accreditation. Our community thrives on a shared commitment to personal growth and excellence.
